The Rollie Nation success story

When Vince Lebon started his career, his dream was to become a web designer.

For years, he worked as an independent contractor producing web designs, print media and video for clients; yet, over time, designing physical products became an obsession. Eventually, Vince landed consulting job for a Chinese trading company designing private label footwear for brands like Steve Madden and Chinese Laundry.

As he gained exposure to designing footwear, the idea of creating his own line of shoes started consuming much of Vince’s attention. Inspired by his flight attendant wife Kat — who he lovingly calls Rollie — Vince saw an opportunity to develop a more comfortable shoe, one that anyone would be happy to wear throughout the day, even traveling around the world.

In 2011, Vince developed the concept for his own brand and launched Rollie Nation in 2012.

The Australian-founded company combined Vince’s passion for shoes, interest in trends and innovative design skills to create an entirely new shoe concept.

I’ve used multiple ecommerce platforms in the past, including Shopify and WordPress. When I first started selling online, I opted to build components on WordPress, which we felt comfortable leveraging for our CMS, with the ecommerce experience powered by BigCommerce.

I find BigCommerce has a really great balance in the way that it plugs into apps natively and provides insightful analytics out of the box.

BigCommerce is a serious platform for online stores. The extensive built-in features, coupled with great complementary integrations and apps, is an excellent fit for fast-growth businesses like ours.

Enterprise-grade product filtering and search

The fact that BigCommerce Enterprise offers built-in Faceted Search and Product Filtering has been a game-changer for us.

In footwear, there can be up to 14 sizes and multiple options per SKU. Given how quickly we turnover inventory, customers were previously clicking three or four styles before finding a shoe available in their size, which is a frustrating shopping experience.

Once we were able to build faceted search into our navigation, sales exploded.

When we realized how much opportunity for us to scale our business through digital, and specifically through our website, BigCommerce Enterprise allowed us to scale quickly and take it to another level.

I chose BigCommerce because I felt the platform offered the best combination of ease-of-use and flexibility.

My wife has a retail store that utilizes Shopify, so I’m very familiar with both the native functionality and available add-ons. What I’ve seen is that Shopify’s reliance on third-party apps to deliver functionality natively available in BigCommerce has a negative impact on site performance, not to mention adding costs.

Additionally, the bespoke site we’ve been able to build using BigCommerce’s Stencil theme framework is clean and very fast. Having the ability to add multiple staging sites before we push updates live also enables us to test new features without impacting our store.

Direct to consumer sales drive massive growth

We were predominantly a wholesale business, and we have recently transitioned to selling direct to customers around the world.

Our website is a major component of how we deliver our story to customers. By focusing more on building a direct relationship with our customers, we’ve been able to create a distinct brand identity and community, which also has given us more opportunity to communicate what sets Rollie apart. By refocusing on digital channels, we’ve seen a more than 200% increase in revenue and orders in the past year.

Looking back, I’m humbled to have had the opportunity to realize my dreams — both as a web and product designer, and having launched my own company with BigCommerce.

I think that you can easily look at all ecommerce platforms and try to build the best platform in your head, but the reality is there is not one platform that does a great job at everything.
