Built on years of removing checkout friction

Checkout is where revenue happens. It's also where friction, confusion, or hesitation can cost you a sale.

Optimised One-Page Checkout has been BigCommerce's native, default checkout since 2019, and in February 2025 we fully retired Legacy Checkout, moving every remaining store onto this experience. Along the way, we've kept investing in cutting friction further — adding digital wallets like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal, and rolling out Fastlane by PayPal's one-click guest checkout in 2024. In August 2025, we announced checkout got 41% faster.

Today we're taking the next step in that evolution: a more modern version of Optimised One-Page Checkout. We've reduced the number of steps to purchase, made mobile interactions feel more natural, and smoothed transitions throughout.

If you're currently using our native Optimised One-Page Checkout, the enhanced experience is now available as an opt-in upgrade. Your checkout won't change unless you turn it on: go to Settings › Checkout in your control panel and select "Enable enhanced checkout experience" when you're ready.

What’s new

Our enhanced checkout experience already brought a lot to the table. Now, it brings even more:

  • Removed billing step: Billing address fields now live below the selected payment method.

  • More readable interface: We’ve updated typography and increased whitespace usage, making information easier to scan and actions easier to complete.

  • New loading states and smooth animations: Keep customers engaged from start to order placement.

  • Order summary visibility: As customers scroll on desktop, their running total will now continuously remain in view. On mobile, the total slides up as a bottom-sheet overlay, so it stays accessible without taking over the screen.

  • Optimised address fields: We’ve re-ordered billing address fields, placing the country at the top to match how customers naturally enter this information  at checkout.

Before you enable

Before you enable these new features, there are a few important considerations:

  • Opt-in only: This won't change your checkout automatically, it only takes effect once you manually enable it in Settings › Checkout.

  • Easy revert: You can opt-out of the enhanced checkout experience at any time in your checkout settings.

  • Checkout customisations: We've kept most of the existing checkout page structure and CSS class names, but we recommend testing your customisations against the enhanced experience, as some may need updates.

  • App compatibility: Some checkout apps may not yet support the new experience. Review your installed apps before switching.

The final word

These improvements are part of our ongoing commitment to deliver a modern, frictionless checkout experience. When checkout feels effortless, customers are more likely to convert.

Enable it today and give your customers a smoother path to purchase.
